The “Beloved İstanbul” which Master Münir Nurettin Selçuk recites in his music is resisting time, faced with an irrevocable destruction and invasion. The Master’s delightful tunes seem to be the only permanent thing amid the chaotic atmosphere of a stroll from the Galata Bridge to the Tunnel in Beyoğlu.

Münir Nurettin Selçuk
Born in İstanbul in 1901, he began composing in 1920. His first records, which bear a distinctive style that combine the old rendition of the classical Turkish music with a new conception, were released by the label His Master's Voice in 1928. He went to Paris in the same year for vocal training. Münir Nurettin Selçuk is the first Turkish music singer that has training in authentic voice techniques. His performance style which bears the traces of the 19th Century Italian opera singing was influenced by the “Bel Canto.” He introduced the tradition of solo concerts in the history of the classical Turkish music. He gave his first concert in 1930 upon his return from Paris in the venue which is the Dormen Theatre today. He evoked great interest and admiration. He wore black tie and tails in his concerts and remained standing while singing. He is also the first to use the tradition of singing solo, accompanied by a choir. He integrated the western influences of the opera, tango into his own unique rendition of the the classical Turkish music. He started to produce his major compositions after 1940-41. After he returned to İstanbul, he served as a member of the Executive Board of the İstanbul Municipal Conservatoire for more than thirty years. He contributed to the upbringing of many musicians from the young generations. He died on 27th April 1981.
